It was this time last year that I began my journey on the Paleo Diet. My goal was to get healthier and perform better. I had never felt like my daily trips to McDonald’s and my massive consumption of SPAM and rice were weighing me down (literally and figuratively), but I knew that there had to be something positive I would get by eliminating that stuff and adding in healthy, nutritious foods. The first two weeks were a massive struggle and my timing couldn’t have been worse. I started the CrossFit Open the same week, and that coupled with my body in detox from all things not Paleo made for one heck of a wretched combination. But I was determined to stick with it, and once the first two weeks passed and my body adjusted to the new diet I started to feel great. As a byproduct of eating healthier, within a month I had lost about 12 pounds. I didn’t think I had that much to lose, but I wasn’t complaining.
After the first 30-day challenge I ended up staying fairly strict for another few months, with a cheat here and there. And it wasn’t because I was forcing myself to eat Paleo, but by that point it had become routine for me to eat that way. Over the fall and winter I veered a bit and the cheats were much more frequent. That’s about where I’m at now, but I’m ready to get back on the program. Yes, I know that the CF Games Open is going on as well, but I’m hoping that since I’m already sort of close to eating Paleo regularly (say 85%), I’ll just need to clean it up and hopefully it won’t zap my energy like last year.
Who’s ready? 30-Day Paleo Challenge 3.0 starts today. Let’s go!
